The Well House is more than your average South London rental apartment. Our beautiful shared spaces and busy events calendar bring our friendly community together to chat, eat and be merry. And 2023 was a bumper year for our residents, with something for everyone to enjoy, from fancy dress parties and afternoon tea to book swaps and a gardening club.
Celebrating our culture
There were plenty of opportunities to celebrate our residents’ diverse culture and sample food and drink from around the world, with a host of global celebrations. We marked Lunar New Year with sweet treats, flipped pancakes for Shrove Tuesday and shared delicious Moon cakes for our Moon festival. We also marked the Festival of Lights with our Diwali event, while around 60 people came together for our Eid celebrations.
There was plenty for our younger residents to enjoy too. This year we went all out for Easter, with fancy dress, an eggs-tra special Easter egg hunt and more than 90 entries in our ‘guess the number of eggs in the jar’ competition. At Well House flats in Sutton we love nothing more than to dress up, and our Halloween family party and fancy-dress contest proved popular with people of all ages. Cute cats, creepy vampires and even mini pumpkins came along on the day to enjoy candy and spooky crafts.
Mouth-watering treats
Our wine and cheese event also brought together 40 people for networking and nibbles, while our afternoon tea was a hit with our sweet-toothed residents. We rounded off the year in style with a Christmas get together, complete with mulled wine, mince pies, hot chocolate and marshmallows. The festive event also challenged children to put their creative hats on for a gingerbread decorating workshop.
Giveaways and competitions
Throughout the year, we ran a host of competitions within our community, from a Wheel of Fortune prize giveaway for Lunar New Year, to a £50 voucher for the winner of Pet of the Month, as voted for by our residents. And because we know how important it is to stay healthy, every Friday we offer everyone who lives at The Well House free fruit.
Supporting our community
Our resident team cares deeply about supporting our community — both physically and emotionally. We encouraged residents to chat over coffee and brunch for Mental Health Day and held a Wear It Green family quiz night to mark Mental Health Awareness Month.
This year we also launched our weekly gardening club, a chance for green-fingered folk to get outside to plant herbs, fruit or flowers in the community garden. For those who prefer to curl up with a good read, our book swap gave them a chance to refresh their library, in a free and sustainable way. We also have TRAID clothing and Sutton Food Bank collection points on site, allowing residents to donate what they can for those in need.
